More and more companies are leveraging the phone interview for an initial screen before bringing candidates in for a face-to-face meeting. In most cases, your interview is with someone in HR, but some technology companies conduct phone technical interviews. Whatever the reason for scheduling an interview over the phone, it’s important that you are on the ball to give yourself a great shot at a follow-up and eventually a job offer.

5 Tips to Ensure Your Phone
Interview Etiquette is Exemplary.

  1. Make Sure to Go Over your Résumé and Work History
If the phone interview is with someone in HR, be sure to analyze your entire résumé, so you are able to explain any job transition, gaps in employment history, or your responsibilities at any one position. You need to be able to quickly recall anything on your résumé without an uncomfortable pause, so spend the required time reviewing your work history.
  2. “Display” an Air of Confidence
Even though the interviewer can’t see you, they can tell if you aren’t confident in your abilities. It is important to give off a confident demeanor, so speak clearly with strong articulation.
  3. Do your Homework on the Company
Take the time to fully research the company with which you are interviewing. You can expect to have the opportunity to ask a question or two, and it is important that these questions reveal you spent the time doing the proper up-front analysis.
  4. Prepare your Environment
The place where you will take the interview phone call needs to be quiet with proper lighting, so you are able to focus on the interviewer’s questions and giving them a well-considered answer. Keep any extraneous noise to a minimum.
  5. Follow Up just like it was a Normal Interview
It is important to send a thank you note to the interviewer either through email or by using a regular letter. This is no different than any in-person interview. Make sure you come off in a professional manner.
